Pre-release events for the next MTG set, Lorwyn Eclipsed, are set to start on Jan. 16. While the full preview period is slated to begin on Jan. 5, head designer Mark Rosewater has once again shared a lengthy rundown of gameplay teasers ahead of time.
Within the many teasers, several are particularly notable. Lorwyn Eclipsed will feature a "card that searches each turn." This effect likely refers to a enchantment that allows a you to look through their library every upkeep for a certain card, potentially with certain restrictions.
It could be an effect as simple as searching for a basic land each round, or a more dynamic such as a search effect that grows based on a board state.
Rosewater also mentioned a new piece that duplicates triggered abilities. This is possibly linked to Kirol, Attentive First-Year, a planeswalker that, by tapping two untapped creatures, can replicate a ability one time per turn.
A further notable teaser involves an ability that will "negate every spells your opponents have on the stack." Although the wording is slightly unclear, it implies an extremely potent ability capable of handling numerous castings simultaneously.
This expansion will further feature effects that reference "the difference between its strength and defense." With cards having stat lines like 1/3 or 3/1, this mechanic could prove highly relevant.
A significant story reveal is a creature with the type line: "Legendary Creature – Elf Faerie Noble." Given the historic tension between Elves and Faeries on this plane, this combined type suggests a major story development.
Rosewater also stated the core eight creature types featured in the set: Elemental, Elf, Faerie, Giant, Goblin, Kithkin, Merfolk, and Treefolk. This reiterates a strong tribal theme for Lorwyn Eclipsed.
Late in the rundown, he names "Bark of Doran," likely a reference to Doran, the Siege Tower, suggesting a continued emphasis on the interplay of attack and defense.
In addition to these major mechanics, the set will feature:
Finally, Rosewater teased a few card names, like Mirrorform, Moonshadow, Gilt-Leaf’s Embrace, and Chaos Spewer. These names offer early clues into the set's narrative themes and are nods to established elements from the plane's history.
All told, Lorwyn Eclipsed isn't just a return to a fan-favorite plane but also a challenge to determine whether contemporary Magic: The Gathering can handle the distinctive complexities that made the first Lorwyn block so special.
