Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track immediately ahead of his car
The alarming incident took place on the third lap when marshals were spotted on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing
Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication at some point but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a live track safety personnel can be allowed to just run across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the circumstances
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was informed that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the regulatory authority
"On lap three, track officials were alerted and put on alert to access the circuit and recover the debris once all cars had passed"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch personnel were withdrawn and a caution signal was raised in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what transpired following that moment"
